What the?

Yeah that’s right…I’m going to be hosting this service myself (at least for how long I can), plus some other inititives will be taking place so I’m placing the server on Linux instead of Windows. There were some MySQL queries that I had attempted that didn’t go by on Windows and with PHP5….so I’m going to give it a shot with Linux and we’ll see where we can get. If you’d like some development space…let me know.

As it turns out I didn’t find a login script…I completely changed what I was going to do and I started a completely different site. http://cybermagellan.com still has no name…no logo…just a service I want to see how far and fat I can take it. However it has been awhile since I posted anything on my blog so I felt it was time for an update. I guess I’ll use this as kinda a changelog as well. Back to work on the site.

PHP and MySQL

OK, So I finally just gave up on trying to learn the whole PHP and MySQL stuff and decided to go with finding myself a script that I can use. I was able to and with a little bit of tweaking manage to sneak it onto my site. If anyone reads this site…check it out. All you can do is register and login but oh how we must come from humble beginnings.

Starting my own service

After using Flock for awhile I’m really starting to apreciate having services at my fingertips. Flock makes advantage of a Blog Topbar as well as a Topbar for Flickr and it’s pretty nice to save some time and get some things done. Though in the “hourly” builds the blog topbar doesn’t work (This is known so far) in the stable release it’s a really nice feature. So I’ve thought about doing this myself.

I’m going to start my own service vCardMe. Basically it’s just a site to announce your other properties, however I would like at the same time of working along with Flock to be able to integrate my own service to post to. I’m not sure how I’m going to do this however it’s something I look forward to learning.

I know I know I said I was going to get away from having so much blue in my life. So I decided to give a browser that I really like (besides AOL Explorer) a fighting chance. As it turns out I really REALLY like it and so I’m going to spend some time dedicated to it for a little. That being said I’m going to hop on over to Flock and see what kind of trouble I can start

So far those guys have really impressed me. They say first impressions are lasting impressions, that being the case they’ve got Chris Messina over on there team and I’m really happy to talk to him again…even if just for a little. Chris and myself (Though he might not remember) had a talk about Drupal and SpreadFirefox as well as where Mozilla was heading. Shortly after he leaves to go to Flock so I guess that says something. However Chris has as long as I known him has been up beat. Lloyd (the QA guy) has been really nice to me as well. I can’t argue with what they got going on and the direction they’re heading as well as their attitude.

Before I had written my own browser that implemented the same items that they have in Flock but it was in Visual Basic, I had no community interest in it and slowly it lost my interest as I have no evaluation so it was perfect in my opinion. I’m glad I’m going to be talking to some people who have the same vision as I do, just a bit more time and experience to work with it.

Drowning in Blue

I read a ton of blogs, when I say a ton I mean I could spend all day reading blogs and still not be 100% happy with just that much…but one thing I do notice alot…I read alot of AOL related blogs.

Really I can’t argue with it, I love AOL really. There was a time (Before working there) where people would come up to me with laptops in hand with the AOL software on the front with tears in their eyes and say “I can’t get connected”. I would turn them away and say “Sorry I don’t touch that”. Lately though I’ve thought about becoming a dedicated AOL Tech outside of work. And I would have no problem with that after all I belong to the #1 technical team within the company. However one small problem.

I’m drowning in blue…AOL is a nice place to work at, and it does a good job at being all things to all people however it can wrap you up sometimes. I noticed this reading Jason Calcanis’s weblog. Now Jason doesn’t use AOL Journals (He uses his own service) however he had a thread at one point where he linked to different AOL “peoples” blogs, and a few of them weren’t on Journals either. I noticed the posting style changing and realized that eh, perhaps? I’m becoming a little innertwined within things to see that there is a Web outside of “Welcome, You’ve Got Mail”. I noticed this also whenever I started pondering what a Web 2.0 website would do cached on our Topspeed servers.

So I think I’m going to give up on my AOL Journal. AOL is moving toward an Internet based platform with the portal and all and I can’t see trying to stay ontop of my A game with the Internet and not getting out there. I already use a few services (Flickr vs. AOL You’ve Got Pictures, and Del.icio.us vs. AOL Favorites), but things like the AOL Suite, AOL 9.0, and others tie you to the service, and these things are going to have to take a break. So I’m gonna give a few things a shot now…I’m going to stick with AIM (I don’t trust anything else) but I’m going to start using Flock vs. AOL Explorer. Mail again is something I’ll use the AOL Mail webpage for…but as for the software…not so much.

Who knows? I could wind up really liking it and being all “gun ho!” about another service…and then again I could just pack it all up and go back with what I know and feel best about at that moment. But you never learn if you don’t do. And I’m a great procrastinator…I can sit on the idea forever…so I better just get to it.

Dinner and 4 Dollars

So as always I get on the bus to come home and the 8 is pretty quiet. Should be it’s 7:15 at night and nothing is going on. I do my usual routine and get off the bus at Campbell and Broadway, except today is different…I have $4.00 in my pocket!

I’m really in the mood for some food seeing I skipped lunch. Now if you know the intersection I’m talking about you know there is a Safeway, a Carl Jrs, and a Losbetos. Safeway = Food in packages, um no. Carl Jrs = Food from packages, na uh. Losbetos it is! So I walk in and get the cheapest item on the menu, a Quesadilla. Now if you’ve never eaten at Losbetos I don’t know what you’re doing reading this because you need to be there now. Now I know what you’re thinking “$4.00, WOW You can buy a soda with that”. Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce the great state of Arizona.

Arizona is really wonderful. It’s filled with a varying mixture of people. Now back in PA if you were a minority EVERYONE knew where you came from except there really weren’t that many. Arizona is FLOODED with different people. So we have a ton of Mexican take out places.So I wander in with my $4.00 and order my food. $2.60. Now if you’ve never had a Quesadilla I suggest you try one. Ingredients for one at Losbetos…

Tortilla
Cheese

They take a Tortilla about the size of a Frisbee and throw a few slices of cheese on it, fold it over, and let it “seal” together.Then when it is done they roll it up and throw it in the bag with some salsa and napkins and you’re on your way. Except today I sat down and ate mine. I never knew two ingredients would feel so good in my stomach.

So after I get done with my snack (More like dinner), I had 5 minutes to catch the bus to get home. Damn $1.20 in my pocket awesome! Medium Coke $1.09 + tax. So that puts me at $1.17 for my soda. Dinner and a drink for 4 smackers….can’t argue with that.If you’re ever in Tucson and have $4.00 do yourself a favor and grab some dinner.

Starting Over

So I deleted all the other post that were here cause they were lame, lame, lame…so I’m going to start over again.

I’ve decided that I am going to go forward with my book about riding the bus…hmmm, lets see what I should name it? How about Away from Work? Because that is really what it is about…being away from work and on the way to work. Sounds like a plan, now to get with it man.
